Angela Haigh: Hello! First, I know a few people have posted recently to say that for one reason or another, they are not able to make the show they had tickets for. I am sorry to hear that; it happened to me a few years ago, so I know how it feels :-( Here is my review of the show at Glasgow on Tuesday night. It was my first one since the one in Birmingham just a year ago, and I was very excited! Glasgow is the city of my birth, and I always feel something special when I go back there. We don't live too far away; by car, it's about 90 minutes. We set off after lunch, and parked up in the city centre, where we had time to wander about before finding somewhere to have a meal. Wow! It felt very cold! We have been having a "cold snap" for a few days, but maybe because I was in my concert clothes, I felt colder than when I am home? The venue was the Clyde Auditorium (part of the SECC) is a beautiful building, and locally it's called "The Armadillo" and the picture here may explain why!: http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/EAE3FB7B-A3D8-4ADC-9767-D086B45ADD9B/0/clydeauditorium.jpg It certainly looked beautiful, lit up, as we arrived, as did the nearby river with its bridges, also lit up. It also felt lovely once we were inside. I was warm enough to take my jacket off as soon as we got to our seats, and the seats were nice and comfy too. We had heard that the sound was very good, and so it proved. Al Vosper was the "start act" and he sang about 5 songs from his new album. He told us that it was available from cdeb.net and would have been available in the vestibule, but he had left his box containing them at home! He said if anyone was going to Manchester on Wednesday, they could buy it there instead! People were still taking their places during Al's act; It annoyed me a little that they didn't wait until he had completed one of his songs before walking through and disturbing people. Grrrr! Chris began his show at 8 15. It started with The Storyman Theme, but the lights hadn't been dimmed at all, and people in the audience continued talking, laughing etc, which I felt was a shame. I won't go through the whole set list; not that I can remember it all anyway, probably! Chris was solo to begin with, and joined by the band later. Chris mentioned how Glasgow had won the bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, for which we are extremely pleased; and of course, football was mentioned: Scotland play Italy on Saturday; if we win, a place in next year's European Championship is guaranteed, and he wished us good luck :-) he then cracked a joke, but I can't remember it!!!!! He also said that he has been visiting Glasgow since before most of the audience was born; well so have I!!!! And I have to agree with him when he said how the City has changed. The city I knew as a young girl wouldn't be recognised today. Monika has mentioned the architecture, and I have to agree with her; the architecture is great, and what I love about it (and in fact buildings in the west, including where I live) is the beautiful red sandstone that so many of homes and other building are made from. When I heard the start to Where Will We Be Going, I got a chill down my back; I don't know why, but it came over very very powerfully. I think it was the opening song to the very first show I went to (but I may be wrong!). The Leader trilogy, as always, was just stunning; I thought to myself ... how can you follow this? But he did, of course! I particularly enjoyed Don't Pay the Ferryman / High on Emotion / Snows of New York, as well as the two mentioned except of course it meant the show was over, and as I am not able to go to any of the others, that is it for another year! I thought the sound was absolutely great, and the band really seemed excellent. The audience participated very well, and loved his Britney act, especially when he went upstairs. He ad libbed during Lady in Red, so that he was singing to individual people as he walked round, and that also went down really well. I came out "high on emotion" as always. It was only as we were on our way out that we spotted a notice warning that strobe lighting would be used during the show; that's something I need to be wary of, but I was ok anyway! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole show, and even outside it didn't feel as cold! We had a walk along the river before heading back to the car, and set off home, arriving back at 12 30 roughly. I was exhausted! Hope you have enjoyed reading this, and that others enjoy the shows as much as I did! Angela |
