Many years ago when my son had just started primary school, the teacher was trying to get the class to understand time. One of the questions she asked them was " who gets you up in the mornings" my son immediatly put his hand up and said " Chris de Burgh gets my mum up and he usually gets me up as well" I must explain that I had a radio alarm clock at the time with a cassette player on it. To celebrate this occasion I've put together a little poem for you. It's a poem describing the journey of a river from it's source to the sea - and it flows through 'Chris De Burgh land' on the way! It's a bit like your song 'The Storyman' - it is written to include song titles and lyrics. If I'm right, there are 11 actual song titles here (one is repeated so doesn't count the second time), and 1 album title. 8 songs are covered by way of lyrical references, either direct words from yourself (which I've printed in capitals) or my own way of telling it.

FROM A SPARKLE TO A FLAME
High in the mountains a spring appears,
To meet with other springs, rolling like tears
And where these streams of silver go,
That's WHERE PEACEFUL WATERS FLOW -
Further down the mountain-side
A man has built his place to reside,
It's been a dream of this special man
To do this thing, he sang the plan -
"AND THERE BESIDE A MOUNTAIN STREAM I'LL BUILD A HOUSE OF STONE"
Inside a fire keeps out the chill
and warms the man who said "I WILL."
Down to where the foothills lie
This stream, with cascades, rushes by,
On through hamlets quaint it goes
and IN A COUNTRY CHURCHYARD flows.
Now through fields and towns it weaves,
Slow and wide and autumn TREES
ARE CRYING LEAVES INTO THE RIVER
As the wind blows through and makes me shiver.
Up above it's blue and high -
A vast, serene yet LONELY SKY.
To a town this water's come
On it's banks folk have fun
With picnics, boating, feeding swans,
Someone's having tea and scones,
Lovers on the bank afar
Are quite old-fashioned, yes they are,
They walk here often in the park
But always hurry home for tea before dark.
Not a million miles away
Some younger folk sit round and play
JUST SITTING DOWN HERE BY THE RIVERSIDE
WATCHING THE WORLD GOING BY.
Further downstream now we go
A man-made lake now steals the show
And once upon a moonlit night
Two lovers came here, had a fight,
In fact 'twas only yesterday,
Recent, yes, I have to say
And whilst he swam she ran away
And took his clothes, that made him pay!
The bloke had clearly made a big mistake,
And was left naked, frozen, beside the lake.
LAST NIGHT came the very man
Of legend - yes, the Ferryman -
The lad all cold and clotheless from
The row just mentioned (with nothing on!)
Well, he got very, very sad
By the quarrel he'd just had
And thought he'd end it all, this lad -
But out of nowhere came the voices,
Strange and un-seperable noises,
And so his life he chose to review it,
And went with the words in the night "Don't Do It!"
Finally we reach the sea,
The river here's an estuary,
Waters fresh from high in the hills,
Now into the ocean spill,
Nearby on a golden beach,
Just out of the tidal reach
Are FOOTSTEPS, so a walk's been done -
But why are there two sets of prints, then just one?
Cliffs of splenour they abound,
A meeting place of sea and ground,
LAST NIGHT I TOOK THE OLD PATH DOWN
Sadly a place where folk have drowned,
But it's THE PLACE I KNEW WHEN I WAS YOUNG -
About this place a song's been sung -
Relating tales of human starkness,
A chilling tale called HEART OF DARKNESS.
Here this story now must end -
THE JOURNEY of a river from start to end -
Out on a rock, out at sea
LIVING ON THE ISLAND wild and free
Are seals and seal pups, what a sight!
Enchanting too on a moonlit night.
Well, in the distance from the bay,
A ship is leaving, SAILING AWAY,
It's part, in fact, of a beautiful scene
A heavenly image, warm and serene,
A red-orange sun is setting and sinking
There's light on the sea as this 'ball' is shrinking,
It's nice to be here for now we have caught a
glimpse of, quite literally, FIRE ON THE WATER.
