Concert Review: Sydney, Australia - March 4, 1997

Doug:

Guess where I have been "Tonight" well actually "Last Night" (just after midnight here in Sydney).

Here is a big clue - I was sitting next to a "Lady in Red", from the moment I heard the first song I knew things were going to "Carry On" and be a great night, I realised we were in for "Much More Than This", the stage lit up like a "Diamond In The Dark" and without "Fatal Hesitation" I faced "The Simple Truth" that the night was going to be "High On Emotion" and I would be "Crying And Laughing".

"Just In Time" two lucky volunteers got up and sang "In A Country ChurchYard", at first the audience put up a "Wall Of Silence" when asked to participate, then a real train rumbled underneath the theatre and Chris "Was Just A Word Away" from singing "Spanish Train", this accompanied by many "Shadows And Lights" began to bring the crowd to life.....

By the time we got to "Don't Pay The Ferryman" the "Borderline" had been crossed and there were no more "Quiet Moments", too quickly it was all over and I realised "I'm Going Home", I was so high it was more like "Flying Home" on an "Eastern Wind", and although "It's Such A Long Way Home" I realised I had made a "Discovery", I had just had a "Perfect Day".......

Can you tell I've just been to my very first Chris DeBurgh concert ???

Chris didn't sing all the songs above but I thought it was an apt way to share with you all how I am feeling tonight......

Greg Fitzgerald:

THE GUY IS A LEGEND

I'm absolutely dog tired. If I told you about it now you'd be sure to feel the emotion but I'll be still typing at 3am. I'll do it tomorrow and it'll make more sense.

Just a couple of things for now:

I heard Head and the Heart and Transmission Ends for the first time in my life. Beautiful

A guy stopped me in the street 200metres from the theatre and said "Where did you get the Tshirt" Your ears should have been burning Dean. He said "Its excellent"

I met a lady who has afriend who has a friend who has been touring Australia. He's Irish and a stonemason. This friend asked the stonemason if he has heard of Chris de Burgh. Yes he has but better than that he once worked on the castle!

There were about 1000 at the concert. Very conservative group of people. Huge range of ages. I WAS JUMPING OUT OF MY SKIN. My first time was everything I expected it to be and more. I think I know how Sally felt in THAT SCENE from "Harry Met Sally". My wife wore red. MMMmmmmmmmm

The thing that stood out the most to me was the power of his voice. Incredible. You know, I could have got that Kareoke part. There was only one girl and her 2 friends that were keen. Everyone else either too shy, whatever. Anyway, I did the audience a favour by sitting on my hands.

Anyway, for now I'll just say it was awesome. He is such a talent. I sure called out alot of requests. Didn't get At the War Memorial or Riding on a Rainbow unfortunately but I'm not complaining.

I'll post a review later for those interested. One last thing, sitting and soaking the whole experience up I was very aware of the human family I belong to, that sense of humanity that Chris sings about, and actually seeing and hearing him in the flesh made me very aware of how our lives are interconnected, especially the people on this list. To think that so many people there tonight have their own personal story that has made Chris some sort of trigger in their life.

I better go to bed, I'm starting to sound like a hippy.
