by Carola Alge De Burgh: Everyone will be dancing at the end of the evening The news that Chris de Burgh is going to give an Open-Air-concert in summer (July 17th) on the marketplace Lingen, caused a sensation. After only 3 days of selling tickets, more than 500 tickets have already been sold. The Irish singer is looking forward to the solo evening. He enjoys the close contact to his audience at such events, so he said in an interview with our newspaper. Actually he loves the German audience, because they are so enthusiastic. The interview word-to-word: Mr. de Burgh, on July 17th you are a guest in Lingen. Do you have any idea of the city? De Burgh: No. One of the great things about my summer-tour is that I get the chance to visit smaller German cities. With most of the big international productions you dont get the chance to do this. I think its fascinating and I am looking forward to it. Will you have time to look around the place? De Burgh: I always take the time, to walk around in the cities in the afternoon and I try to stay at the venue after the show, to enjoy the local nightlife. You once said, it doesnt matter to you, whether youre playing in the Wembley-Arena or in a small concert hall, to you the contact with the audience is important De Burgh: Of course I enjoy playing in big arenas, but the contact with the audience at the shows, like for example here in the heart of a city or even in front of a castle is the greatest. By the opinion of many artists, the German audience is very open-minded and enthusiastic. How do you experience the audience here? De Burgh: I have been travelling through Germany for more than 30 years. To me its far the best place to perform in the world, because the audience is so enthusiastic. In Lingen you are going to play solo. Whats in store for the visitors? De Burgh: The concert is a continue of The Road To Freedom World Tour, which I have started last year in March. For this summer we have changed the production, so that visitors, who have already seen me during this tour, can enjoy something new. Of course the show will contain songs of the last tour. And some of my favourites of more than 130 songs, which I have recorded, will be added. A summer evening with Chris de Burgh is the title of the concert. This sounds mainly like a ballad and love-song-evening De Burgh: People always associate an evening full of ballads and love songs with that. But someone, who has seen my solo shows, knows that they are not like that. Its going to be a rock evening like my other concerts with band and I give you the guarantee that everyone will be dancing at the end of the evening. Does it annoy you, that youre often called Weichspler, Soft-Rocker in the media? De Burgh: No. I am not interested in how the media calls me. Could you like Techno-Music? De Burgh: No. How is your relationship towards the press? De Burgh: Being an entertainer, dealing with the press is a part of it. Whether you like it or not its a part of it. Do you follow the treatment of famous people in the media? De Burgh: Not really. Fans can be rather obtrusive. For example there was a woman from Kassel, who phoned Richard Gere almost 1000 times at work and waylaid him all the time. She got a sentence on probation with the condition to leave the US immediately. Did you have to make any of those stalking-experiences, too? De Burgh. No. I have a great relationship towards my fans. Some are surely overenthusiastic, but I have respect that they spend their hard earned money on my records and show tickets. Michael Jackson was just brought to trial again, because of alleged child abuse. What emotions do you personally have regarding this, being a father of three children? De Burgh: I leave it to the court to judge about that. Speaking of emotions. What does inspire you especially when you write songs? De Burgh: I get inspired by many things, mostly by my travels and my experiences in daily life. Before I sit down and write a song there is a sort of film running in my head about the story. You are still admired by beautiful women. Whats that for a feeling? De Burgh: Its always exciting, that people admire you, but I have the same feelings for male fans or children. The relationship to all my fans is special. You are the dad of a beautiful daughter: Rosanna, a Miss World. Are you sometimes worried about her? De Burgh: Like all parents or families would be, we are very proud of Rosanna. Regardless whether its about a competition, education or anything else its simply great to experience what is becoming of the children. How important are family life and children for you? De Burgh: My wife and my children are the most important things in my life. |
