So Beautiful by Chris de Burgh , reviewed by Dave Doohan There cannot be any of Chris' fans who do not know the meaning behind The Lady In Red, how it's meant to portray a man and woman, who, although they have been together for some time somehow seem to have begun taking each other for granted. Then, while out one night, the man realises that he has the privilege to be the partner of a very lovely woman, the sort who many men would want to be with, and the realisation dawns on him that he'd better start and tell her this. Thus is the scene set for a smash hit, the kind of success that Chris hasn't really repeated. So Beautiful is a very good effort at doing just that however. It has a similar theme, a similar tone to the music, you could even stretch a little and say similar lyrics. In So Beautiful we have a man who has been around a little. He's had girlfrie nds before and he thinks he knows what love is and how it feels to be in love. He's met a woman, gone out with her a few times, found it to be a pleasant experience, and now he's begun to reflect on those times. Suddenly it dawns on him that this is mor e than just another relationship "I'm lying here tonight, thinking of the days we've had, In this opening sentence he has stated that he know sees the world in a different light, just because he has this special person in his life. He hadn't realised that this relationship was different until he actually stopped to think about it. The rea lisation has hit him in a wave of emotion. As many of us can probably remember, when you are deeply in love, it can consume your life, your days and nights are spent thinking of nothing else, and so it is portrayed here with the line.. "I'm spending all the days, dreaming of the nights we've had, in essence saying, yes, I've had other loves, but this one, this is THE one. The song becomes a little more emotionally charged later on, speeding up slightly as Chris sings "and then we dance to the rhythm that is burning like a flame, Finally the song offers the commitment to the lady in question with "I'm standing here tonight, thinking of the time we'll have " This is a quality love song from Chris, with a good tune, a reasonable feel of emotion and ultimately a high chart placing to go with it. Not his best effort ever but it rates up there. Some may find the tune a little lacking, a little too la la la, perhaps too commerical - there are indeed points where Chris goes in to the Ahh Ahh Ahh, wailing type voice, but then that is what the Love Songs album is all about and this song epitomises that. Guys, it's definitely one that, if he sings it in concert you'll find yourself singing it while looking not at Chris but at the lady next to you. |
